Florence sightseeing: the district of San Niccolò in Oltrarno

San Niccolò is in that part of Florence that lay between the left side of the river Arno and the hills of Arcetri and San Miniato. Its strategical position, between the historical centre of Florence and Piazzale Michelangelo, make of this part of the city a suggestive place. San Niccolò can be reached, arriving from the centre of Florence, crossing Ponte Vecchio and turning left in Via De' Bardi till the starting point of Via San Niccolo, that gives its name to this part of Florence.

In Via De' Bardi there are some beautyul palaces that characterize Florence, like Capponi delle Rovinate Palace, dated in the early 15th century, Larioni De' Bardi Palace, and the church of Santa Lucia De' Magnoli. Capponi delle rovinate Palace is a late gothic construction that take its name from the periodic landslide of the nearby Costa De' Magnoli that in the past caused the fall of some palaces (rovinate in italian coul be mean ruined). The church of Santa Lucia De' Magnoli was originally an hospital for the pilgrims (there is a legend about a stop here of San Francesco di Assisi) that became church only at the end of the 14th century and was restored in the 1730 and take its actual design.

Going on in Via San Niccolo, that is characterized by the artisan's shops of Florence, there is another church at the corner with Via dell'Olmo: the church of San Niccolò in Oltrarno, where there are many paintings restored after the flood of Florence in 1966. After the church start the centre of this district of Florence, between the central part of Via San Niccolò and Via San Miniato, where there is a door (rest of the old walls) named with the same name, here there are many osterie, pubs and discos that make of this corner of Florence one of the nightlife center. Turning back, going on in Via San Niccolò there is Piazza Giuseppe Poggi, where there is an impressive door (rest of the old walls too) that was the only that wasn't devasted douring the siege of Florence happened in 1529.

In the district of San Nicolò there are many accesses to the hills, where there are the most famous panoramic views of Florence: Piazzale Michelangelo and Forte Belvedere from where is possible to admire the duomo of Florence, Ponte Vecchio (the old bridge) an the other monuments of the city.
